Japanese auto production sinks 57 percent in March

Tokyo -- Japan's production of vehicles declined massively in March, as a result of disruption caused by the Tohoku earthquake and consequent tsunami, according to new data from JAMA, the federation of Japanese automotive manufacturers.

Total automobile production in March 2011 was recorded as 404,039 units. Compared with the 945,220 units total recorded for the same month of the previous year, this is a decrease of 541,181 units or 57.3 percent.

Passenger car production was just 348,474 units, down 475,469 units or 57.7 percent

Truck production was 50,852 units, down 59,916 units or 54.1 percent

Bus production was 4,713 units, down 5,796 units or 55.2 percent

Domestic sales in March 2011 stood at 437,599 vehicles, down 35.1 percent as compared with the same month of the previous year.
